Mouth to Lung Vs Direct to Lung

dtl v mtl

Mouth to Lung (MTL) and Direct to Lung (DTL) are two of the most commonly used terms when talking about how you inhale while vaping.

These terms can be very confusing for new vapers (and sometimes even experienced ones too!). They can be used to refer to types of vape tanks, coils, and so on. They are often combined with other descriptive words to create phrases such as “Restricted DTL” and “Tight MTL”. This can become confusing, so let see if we can help clear this up.

What is Mouth to Lung vaping?

‘Mouth to Lung’ refers to the way you inhale when vaping, and it’s how most of us inhaled when we smoked cigarettes. You draw the vapour into your mouth, then inhale into your lungs. You may prefer this method if you’re new to vaping, or like a good “throat hit”.

What is Direct to Lung vaping?

‘Direct to Lung’ is a different way of inhaling the vapour, rather than drawing the vapour into your mouth you simply inhale it directly into your lungs. Basically taking in a deep medium to long breath, then exhaling. This is normally difficult for new vapours, and tend to cause some coughing. This method is most popular with experienced vapours, due to the large choice of devices and e-liquids.

Why does it matter?

Well, all devices are designed around one style or the other. A MTL tank for example will have been designed with restricted airflow, thus giving the vapour a tight cigarette like draw. Whereas a DTL tank will have been designed with non-restricted airflow, allowing an open / loose draw similar to taking a deep breath.

Picking the right device is essential

Before you go making a purchase, we would highly recommend speaking to us in store, or giving us a call. Buying the wrong device can severely hamper your vaping experience. Have a look at our online store to get an idea of what is available, or visit our YouTube channel to watch reviews and how to’s.

In Conclusion

It doesn’t really matter if you vape Mouth to Lung or Direct to Lung, neither one is better than the other. Most will suggest that people switching should start with a MTL device, and then move on to a DTL device later. However this is not always best approach. We have some sample devices available in store for those who who are unsure. If you can’t make it to store, you could ask a friend or family member to help you research, or give us a call.
